How the E restriction works

If you take your CDL skills test in an automatic transmission truck, your license is issued with restriction E — no manual transmission commercial vehicles. It's not a note on your record; it's a legal limit. Get pulled over driving a manual truck with an E restriction and you're driving outside your license class.

Why some schools only train automatic

Simple: automatic trucks are cheaper to run and easier to teach, so students pass faster and the school moves more people through. That's a good deal for the school. Whether it's a good deal for you depends on the jobs you want.

What the restriction actually costs

• Fewer job offers. Plenty of fleets still run manuals — construction, dump, flatbed, owner-operator rigs, and many regional carriers. An E restriction filters you out of those applications automatically.
• Removing it later means retesting. The only way to drop the E restriction is to go back and retake the road test in a manual truck — more training, another test fee, more time off work.
• Negotiating power. A driver who can take any truck in the yard is worth more than one who can't. That shows up in who gets hired first and who gets the better routes.

Train and test in a manual truck and your CDL comes out unrestricted — you can legally drive both manual and automatic. You learn clutch control and double-clutch shifting once, properly, and every door stays open for the rest of your career.
